In recent years, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro has been striving to adapt to globalization. The International Relations Board, which was set up in 2013, began the process of building a Coordination of International Relations in each academic unit of the University.

The Coordination of International Relations of the Institute of Microbiology Paulo de Góes (CIR-IMPG) was set up in 2016 under the direction of Professor Alane Beatriz Vermelho. The coordination is currently headed by Professor Juliana Reis Cortines, from the Department of Virology.

The role of CIR-IMPG includes:

• Help and encourage the submission of projects to international agencies;
• Provide documents and data to establish scientific cooperation and exchange programs for students, staff and teachers;
• Keep a database on the works carried out in IMPG with international collaboration to assist in the maintenance and development of new collaborations
• These roles will build up the presence of IMPG within the international scenario, leveraging the already recognized excellence in research and teaching and the signing of international agreements that result not only in the qualification of people but also in the development of cutting-edge science.
